Everything You Need to Know about African Warrior Tribes

In the history of African kingdoms, there have been lots of African warrior tribes. The essence of these warriors is basically for the purpose of protecting their kingdoms from intruders who will come to wreak havoc. In times past, there were kingdoms destroyed by other kingdoms because of dominance, and also fighting for natural resources. Kingdoms with large warriors have scared other kingdoms away in order not to conquer them, and this was the situation that existed in entire Africa.

A perfect example of these African warrior tribes can be found in a country like ancient Egypt. This nation was the first to experience civilization, and they have also become one of the world powers. This was made possible due to their large number of warriors. For instance, different kingdoms and empires were afraid of the Egyptian, Mali, and Somali Empires due to their warriors. Let’s get to know these African warrior tribes that have existed.

African Warrior Tribes

In Africa, there were warriors that stood out amongst other warriors based on their distinct strategy in plotting wars and also conquering other kingdoms. The following are the highly recognized African warrior tribes:

1.     Shona People:

The tribe ‘Shona’ can be found in Zimbabwe, and they are part of Bantu. At a point in time, they were one of the strongest African warriors who conquered many kingdoms, tribes, and cultures. Even other kingdoms in Southern Africans were subjected to their authority. They had great influence, sophisticated spears, and bows to defeat other kingdoms.

Shona people made the Swahili tribe paid homage to their leadership. There was a fixed time for the Swahili rulers to pay loyalty or tribute to the Shona rulers, and this lasted for some period of years. The Swahili tribe had to find a way to face their fears by fighting the Shona people in order to have their liberty.

2.     Fulani Tribe:

The Fulanis had the largest amount of African warrior tribes throughout the entire West African. From time memorial, the major occupation of these people is either rearing or trading of cattle. In every home or hamlet, 90% of the people are into cattle trading, and this was the reason they traveled from regions to another in search of greener pastures for their livestock.

They had one of the fierce nomadic warriors that captured and enslaved other kingdoms within West Africans. Kingdoms in this part of Africa acknowledged the Fulani warriors based on their dominance in terms of their expertise in fighting wars. They are found in West African countries such as Mali, Nigeria, Guinea, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

3.     Massai Tribe:

These tribes were herders and fierce warriors that dominated numerous kingdoms in countries like Kenya, Tanzania, and many others. During the period of their domination, they made other empires feel inferior to their leadership. One thing to surprise you about this tribe they have the ability to hunt and kill lions inside the forest. This feat shows how powerful they are in terms of strength.

The people of Massai lived in plains found in regions like Tanzania and Kenya. The plains are where they rear their livestock. They had incredible warriors to capture any kingdom in West Africa and having close similarities with the Fulani warriors. The Massai tribe was one of the African warrior tribes.

4.     Mali People:

The Mali people established one of the most powerful kingdoms in the Western part of Africa. Based on its powerful warriors, they colonized different tribes in West Africa. They were so influential to the point that even the North African Berbers paid tribute to them.

It was a well-recognized empire due to the ability to conquer, colonized, and also uniting tribes in West Africa. Their warriors behaved in a cunning way that enabled them to resist the influence of the Portuguese invaders, and this made them so strong in this part of Africa.

5.     Oromo Tribe:

During the century, the Oromo tribe conquered, defeated, and dethroned other empires. In the Eastern part of Africa, they had the strongest African warrior tribes and expanded their territories by making people from other empires become their citizens. If you had fertile lands within this region, their warriors will definitely come for it.

One of the kingdoms their warriors were able to conquer is the Abyssinia Kingdom. The Abyssinia Empire was defeated and it was later replaced with the Yejju Dynasty. During the process of taking lands from other kingdoms, they also gained kingdom expansion. This was one of the African warrior tribes that became a force for the Ethiopians against the Egyptians and Italians.

6.     Berbers:

The Berbers tribe was densely populated, and they are seen in different countries in North Africa such as Morocco, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, and other Western Sahara. This warrior conquered Spain, the Roman kingdom, and the Persian colonizers that were in existence during that time.

The Berber’s warriors were found along with the Mediterranean Sea fighting and conquering countries in West Africa. One thing was peculiar among the Berbers warriors which were the conversion of Kingdoms to Islam. Due to their influence, they were able to dominate regions around the Mediterranean Sea.

7.     Zulu Tribe:

The Zulu tribe was the largest and strongest tribe in the Southern regions of Africa. They became famous based on their fighting ability. The British colonies were scared of the Zulu tribe to the point they had to run away with their crude weapons. If they could chase the British colonies with mere inferior weapons, you could imagine how strong they will be handling advanced weapons.

The Zulu warriors were able to make wise calculation when it comes to war strategies against their adversaries, and this ability made them had an edge over other warriors in this region. The good thing about the Zulu warriors they don’t destroy kingdoms; they made other kingdoms joined forces with them.

8.     Abyssinian People:

This was part of the African warrior tribes found in countries such as Eritrea, and Ethiopia. They were known for their culture and politics that could be traced from their origination. The Abyssinian people were able to capture the Southern Arabians and also colonized them. They had an awesome terrain protecting them from invaders or intruders who wanted to capture them.

9.     Nubian People:

These African warrior tribes were strong but were underrated by other kingdoms in Africa. The Nubians were the tribe who invented the Kush kingdoms and this became the kingdom that stood the test of time amongst other kingdoms in Africa. Apart from this, foreign invaders couldn’t withstand them, and they were able to rule over the Egyptian empire.

10.  Somali People:

This is the most powerful African warrior tribe ever known. Their warriors were skilled with awesome tactics and this made it possible for the Somali people to defeat the ancient Hittites. This tribe was the first to embark in naval warfare with the Portuguese empire, conquering and also enslaving them. Their defeat led them to become the first tribe to order for sophisticated weapons, and they colonized Abyssinia for good 14 years. They can be found in countries such as Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia.
